Does couples counselling work over video?

For most couples, yes. A 2021 meta-analysis that pooled studies comparing therapy by live video with therapy in person found negligible differences in outcomes for many common problems. What matters most is the same online as offline: a skilled counsellor, a structured approach, and both partners feeling safe enough to be honest.

Online sessions also remove some real barriers for Indian couples: the commute, the fear of being seen walking into a clinic, and the difficulty of finding a couples specialist in smaller cities.

Setting up a session at home

  • One screen or two? Most couples sit together in front of one laptop, which keeps the conversation natural. Use a laptop rather than a phone if you can, so the counsellor can see both of you.
  • Find privacy. In a joint family, privacy is often the biggest worry. Options couples use: a bedroom with the door closed and a fan or music on outside, earphones with a splitter, a parked car, or a booked meeting room. It's fine to tell family it's "a work call".
  • Check the basics ten minutes before. Charge the laptop, test the internet, silence notifications.
  • Plan the hour after. Sessions can stir things up. Avoid scheduling them right before a family dinner or an important meeting. A short walk together afterwards helps.

What happens across sessions

Couples counselling with Tripti follows her six-phase Unmasking Method:

  1. Unmask: assessment, each partner's history and goals.
  2. Map: the pattern, triggers and conflict cycle you both get caught in.
  3. Repair: communication, boundaries and emotional regulation.
  4. Express: art-based and reflective exercises (no artistic skill needed).
  5. Rebuild: trust, closeness and shared goals.
  6. Protect: relapse prevention and a written follow-up plan.

Not every package uses every phase; shorter packages focus on the phases you need most. Simple standardised questionnaires at the start, middle and end let you see change, not just feel it.

Packages and fees

Fees are per package and include the assessment, a written plan, tools between sessions and a closing review. A free 15-minute discovery call comes first, with no obligation.

Platform or a named psychologist?

Online counselling in India is offered in two broad ways. Platforms match you with one of many counsellors, which can be quick and flexible. Working with a named psychologist means you know exactly who you'll see, their approach and their experience before you start. Neither is automatically better. Whichever you choose, ask:

  • Who exactly will I be speaking to, and what is their training in couples work?
  • Will we see the same person every session?
  • What happens if there is a safety concern?
  • Can we talk in the language we're most comfortable in?

When online couples counselling isn't enough

If there is violence, threats or fear in the relationship, couples sessions may not be safe, online or offline. Individual sessions and safety planning come first; call 112 in an emergency. If one partner is struggling with severe depression, addiction or thoughts of self-harm, they may need individual or psychiatric care alongside or before couples work. A good counsellor will say so.

Couples living abroad

Many Indian couples living overseas look for a counsellor who understands their families, festivals, languages and the pull between two cultures. Online sessions make that possible. A few practical points: agree on a session time that works across time zones, mention your location in your enquiry, and expect the same structure and confidentiality as couples in India.

How to tell if it's working

After a few sessions, ask yourselves:

  • Do our arguments end sooner, or with a repair?
  • Can we name our cycle when it starts?
  • Do we each feel more heard, even when we disagree?
  • Are there more moments of warmth outside sessions?

Change is rarely a straight line. If nothing has shifted after several sessions, raise it with your counsellor; a good one will adjust the approach.

A quick checklist before your first session

  • A private room or car, and earphones if needed
  • Laptop charged, internet tested, notifications off
  • Water and tissues nearby
  • A few notes on what each of you hopes will change
  • Time afterwards to decompress, not a meeting or family dinner

Where to go next

Questions people ask

Can we join from different cities?

Sessions are designed for both partners together. If you live apart, mention it in your enquiry and the team will tell you how sessions can work for your situation.

We live abroad. Can we still have sessions?

Yes. Counselling sessions are online by video, so couples can join from anywhere in India or abroad, in English or Hindi.

Is online counselling confidential?

Yes. Everything you share in sessions is confidential, within the ethical limits every psychologist follows, for example if someone's safety is at risk.

What if my partner won't join?

That's very common. You can begin on your own with the Insight package, or ask for the free discovery call together just to ask questions. There's no therapy and no pressure on that call.
